Longtime Boston Mayor Thomas Menino died today. The 71 year old, who led Boston to become a hub of 21st century innovation, finally succumbed to an advanced case of cancer he learned about at the beginning of this year. Menino served five consecutive terms as mayor of Boston, and helped guide Boston through tough times, including economic hardships and the tragic Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Curiosity

My girlfriend Sarah and I went home this Labor Day weekend for the Cougar game. It was also my mother’s birthday, so it was a great time all around. On the way over to Seattle, we were going over Snoqualmie Pass, which has I-90 running through it, when Sarah looked over at me and commented, “It seems like there is always some sort of construction project going on the pass.” Her comment struck me as interesting, and strikingly true. I racked my brain for a reason as to why Snoqualmie pass always has construction projects going on, and offered, “maybe because the pass gets so much use every day, the state has to continue to update and renovate the roads and land around it.” It got me thinking about how many people travel the pass and what type of cars and goods travel it daily. After some research and internet surfing, I figured out that Snoqualmie Pass is one of the most travelled and used mountain passes in the United States, as it sees over 30,000 drivers and vehicles everyday according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Snoqualmie Pass is a particularly important trucking route to bring goods and supplies to Seattle and the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma in Western Washington, and the pass sees over 10,000 trucks a day according WSDOT. As for the construction, it seems like the pass is currently going through a renovation project that spans from the Hyak region of the pass to Keechelus Dam and the area around it. Started in the spring of 2009, the project should be completed by the fall of 2018, which explains why it always seems like there is construction happening over the pass. The students of Washington State University who are from the west side of the state will have to deal with the construction for the foreseeable future as they make their way to and from Pullman during breaks and vacations.
